Leesburg to Refund Drivers for Speeding Tickets After Camera Error Near High School, Investigation Sparks Concern Over Automated Enforcement

Leesburg residents who crossed the line in school zones may find themselves on the right side of a refund, after a speed camera near Leesburg High School made an error in judging the end of a speed-restricted session. The City of Leesburg is issuing refunds, recalling a total of 37 speeding tickets that were mistakenly enforced by the camera post-1:30 p.m., a time initially thought to be the students’ summer school dismissal, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando. Seven individuals who had already settled their fines will see their money returned.

However, the plot thickens with an investigation reported by Clickorlando which reveals that after one driver, 81-year-old Carolyn Block, was wrongfully ticketed and spoke up, the radar-armed camera’s misstep came into the spotlight. The legal enforcement time for the school zone should have ceased at 1 p.m., not the stated 1:30 p.m., which the police were misinformed about by a vice principal, resulting in tickets being incorrectly issued…
