When I moved to The Villages 20 years ago, one of the reasons was the gate system. Nobody said this was a “gated community.” The gates were never intended to keep “others” out. The main benefit of the gates is that cars have to stop, and we all know that if they weren’t there, many (most?) drivers would go barreling through. We cannot be trusted to stop and thereby allow carts to navigate the golf cart path safely. We already have a great deal of trouble stopping at stop signs, I guess for the same reasons we have for not bothering to signal when exiting from roundabouts. And the manned gates do more than give directions to visitors. They provide a welcoming wave, usually with a welcoming smile, when we choose the visitors’ lane to enter a neighborhood.
