A convicted thief was nabbed with $634 in stolen merchandise at Walmart.

David James Benton, 49, of Fruitland Park, was in the store on Citrus Boulevard in Leesburg on Tuesday when a loss prevention officer noticed Benton loading a JBL speaker, dog food and other items into his shopping cart, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.

Benton continued pushing his cart through the store selecting other items, including hamburger buns, wash cloths, insecticide and a power inverter. The Eustis native left the store without paying for the items, but was stopped by the loss prevention officer.

A police officer responded to the store and ran a criminal history check which revealed that Benton had been convicted of grand theft in 1994 and 2000 and had also been convicted of shoplifting in 1999…
