Unlicensed driver from Venezuela runs stop sign to avoid officer near discount store

An unlicensed driver from Venezuela was arrested for driving without a license after running a stop sign and being stopped near Family Discount Mart.

An officer noticed a silver Kia Soul on Harlem Avenue headed toward the intersection with Tuskegee Street around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The driver, 34-year-old Carmen Merchan, saw the officer and abruptly stopped to turn into a nearby residence. She pulled back onto Harlem Avenue about 30 seconds later.

Suspecting she was avoiding law enforcement, the officer moved his vehicle near the intersection and saw the Kia continue westbound on Harlem Avenue. It then made a right turn onto Tuskegee Street and ran a stop sign. The officer subsequently stopped the vehicle across from Family Discount Mart, located at 2201 Griffin Rd., the report said.

The officer approached Merchan who handed him a laminated ID from Venezuela. He contacted dispatch to check her records, but they could not find anything under her name. Further investigation determined she did not have a passport in her possession or a valid driver’s license, the report said…
