My elderly mother is facing the devastating reality of losing the home she paid for in full, in cash, because of a broken system of accountability.
In October 2021, she purchased a mobile home in Lady Lake through Four Star Homes, paying more than $36,000 up front. Four Star also collected fees to handle the title transfer. Despite this, the title was never transferred into her name. There was a lien attached to the property at the time of sale. It was not a monetary lien, debt lien, or lien with a value attached to it. If the title had been transferred properly, that lien should have transferred with it into my mother’s name. Instead, the title was never transferred at all, leaving her legally unprotected.
Since February of this year, when we tried to sell the home, she has been forced to keep paying rent, utilities, and insurance on a property she cannot legally transfer. It totals more than $8,200 so far. I have also paid more than $17,000 in legal fees on her behalf. Altogether, our family’s losses now exceed $61,000.
