Villager loses driver’s license after dangerous driving near gate

A dangerous driver who admitted he had taken hydrocodone for back pain has lost his driver’s license following his arrest earlier this year near an entry gate in The Villages.

Paul Joseph Barcomb, 61, of the Village of Santo Domingo, pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence this past week in Sumter County Court. He will lose his driver’s license for six months, has been placed on probation for one year and has been ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.

Barcomb was driving a gray Ford pickup at about 2 p.m. Jan. 6 when he made a wide turn and drove up onto a median, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle went on to make another wide turn near the guard shack at the El Camino Real entrance to the Village of Santo Domingo. The truck’s driver’s side mirror hit the entry pad at the gate.

A deputy feared Barcomb was suffering a medical episode and initiated a traffic stop. The deputy noticed the truck’s front driver’s side tire was “shredded.”…
