Leesburg couple arrested in crash that claimed life of autistic Fruitland Park man

A Leesburg couple has been arrested in connection to a fatal traffic crash that occurred in July, announced the Fruitland Park Police Department.

Tyrell Colbert, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter and tampering with evidence. His wife, 32-year-old Stephanie Colbert, was also arrested and charged with tampering with evidence. Both were taken into custody at their residence and booked into Lake County Jail without incident.

The crash happened on July 12 at about 5:40 p.m. Fruitland Park police responded to the area of U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and Seagle Street regarding a two-vehicle crash. A black Toyota Tacoma, driven by Tyrell, struck the back of a blue Toyota Corolla while speeding. The backseat passenger of the Corolla, 32-year-old Robert Longenecker of Fruitland Park, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Through the course of the investigation, traffic homicide investigators determined Tyrell was under the influence of alcohol and traveling over 80 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone at the time of the crash. Evidence also revealed he and Stephanie tried to destroy and discard evidence at the scene…
