Secret moving of slot machines led to Il Villagio owner’s bond revocation

Slot machines that were secretly moved to storage units led to the revocation of bond for the owner of Il Villagio, an illegal gaming house that allegedly preyed on senior citizens.

Rima Ray, 44, of St. Augustine, continues to be held without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center. Ray, who is a female but has facial hair and looks like a man, was re-arrested on Oct. 23.

Ray was originally arrested in July driving a Maserati in St. Johns County and carrying nearly $350,000 in cash. Two other employees, assistant manager Barbara Buzzard, 67, of Spruce Creek South in Summerfield, and business manager Terence Morgan, 69, of Ocala, also were arrested in mid-September.

A state investigation of the activities at Il Villagio, located on U.S. Hwy. 441 in the Sumter County portion of Lady Lake, led to the arrests. State Attorney Bill Gladson, in a recent press conference, said that Il Villagio raked in an estimated $24 million in about two and half years of operation. Many of Il Villagio’s elderly customers were Villagers.
