Suspect apprehended in Leesburg in stolen vehicle obtained through Facebook

A suspected was apprehended in Leesburg in a vehicle he obtained through Facebook which was later reported as stolen in Indiana after he stopped making the payments.

An officer learned of a stolen white Dodge Ram 3500, later found to be driven by 30-year-old William Ruben Mesa Martinez of Ocala, in the area of West Dixie Avenue and South 14th Street around 9:15 a.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of New Haven, Indiana, on Oct. 24.

At about 9:25 a.m., the officer spotted the vehicle headed eastbound on East Dixie Avenue. He followed the vehicle as more units responded, and they eventually stopped it at County Road 44 and Shawn Drive. Mesa Martinez was then detained, the report said.

He advised that he leased the vehicle from someone in Indiana, and a lease agreement was in the glove box. The officers found it and contacted the New Haven Police Department. A detective explained that Mesa Martinez tried to buy the vehicle on Facebook and agreed to pay $700 a week for it. He made three payments before he stopped responding to the seller, who reported it stolen, the report said…
