Wildwood Soup Kitchen could be homeless after rent doubles

The Wildwood Soup Kitchen in Sumter County is a 100 percent volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to feeding the community. Each week, volunteers in this organization provide more than 4,200 hot, hearty, and nutritious meals, completely free of charge, to those in need. That’s over 16,000 meals every month served with compassion and care.

With over 750 volunteers, it takes 14 to 16 volunteer shifts each week, including cooks, prep teams, and support staff. These volunteers work tirelessly to keep that kitchen running. Many of these volunteers are residents of The Villages.

Due to the dedication and the generosity of many supporters, they have been able to serve the Wildwood community for many years from their current location at First Presbyterian Church in Wildwood.

Unfortunately, they are now facing an emergency crisis that threatens their ability to continue its vital mission. Their lease is up for renewal under new stipulations: the rent has doubled, building access hours have been reduced, and the available space has decreased, while the demand for meals continues to rise each week…
