Man stopped in unregistered vehicle with coins covering altered VIN plate

A Summerfield man was arrested in an unregistered vehicle with coins covering the altered Vehicle Identification Number plate on the dashboard.

A deputy patrolling the 5200 block of Southeast 145th Street in Summerfield spotted 27-year-old Kyle David Applehans driving a gold Chevrolet Suburban around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle had what seemed like a temporary paper license plate, but a closer look revealed the font was in black marker. The letters overlapped, as well, which was inconsistent with a real temporary plate.

Seeing this, the deputy stopped Applehans in the 14800 block of Southeast 52nd Court. Applehans advised that he had borrowed the vehicle from a friend and did not have registration or proof of insurance. He did have a picture of his license on his phone, though, the report said.

A subsequent check of the license plate confirmed it was invalid. The officer also inspected the vehicle for VIN stickers, finding one on the driver’s door but none on the pillar. However, a check of the VIN returned to nothing. During this process, he noticed the vehicle had been repaired since part of the pillar was black, which was a different color than the outside of the vehicle, the report said…
