Man with unpaid child support busted with narcotics outside shopping plaza

A Tavares man arrested for unpaid child support received additional charges for narcotics found on his person outside Shoppes of Northern Avenue.

A deputy was in the parking lot of Shoppes of Northern Avenue in Leesburg when he spotted 34-year-old Christopher James Gist walking into Bassville Mart at 9:40 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

He had known Gist for at least 10 years and could identify him on sight. He also knew Gist currently had a writ of bodily attachment for failure to pay child support amounting to $1,270, which he made sure was still active before going into the store to make the arrest, the report said.

A subsequent search of his person yielded a plastic baggie of marijuana, two plastic baggies of methamphetamine and a plastic baggie with two pills of buprenorphine. As the deputy removed them from Gist’s right pocket, he stated what each item was. He repeatedly asked the deputy to “dispose” of the illegal drugs, or he would go back to prison for having them.
