Homeless man claims he stole drills to use for possible employment

A homeless man in Leesburg was arrested for theft after stealing two $500 drills from a repair shop and running to Walmart with them.

Officers responded to Champion Rental Purchase / Rent n Go, located at 2479 Citrus Blvd. for a theft involving 26-year-old Collin Michael Sportell at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

The business manager advised that while he was in the bathroom, Sportell came into the garage with a black backpack and a black hoodie tied around his waist. The business was open to the public except for the garage, but he grabbed two snap-on power drills worth $500 each from that area. After he hid them under his shirt in his waistband, an employee confronted him, the report said.

Sportell quickly ran, and the manager had the employee follow him toward a nearby gas station. As soon as he found Sportell, he asked what was taken from the business. Sportell ignored this question to instead run toward Walmart, located at 2501 Citrus Blvd., the report said…
