Suspended driver stopped at 7-Eleven claims he ran red light to get infant medical attention

An Ocala man was arrested for driving with a suspended license after being stopped at 7-Eleven for running a red light.

An officer saw a gray Mazda run a red light and almost collide with a vehicle turning at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and South Street around 7:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. He subsequently stopped the vehicle in the 7-Eleven parking lot, located at 737 S 14th St., to speak with the driver, 24-year-old Shaymus Paul Turbeville.

He claimed he was en route to AdventHealth due to his infant child needing medical assistance. However, that hospital was in the opposite direction from where he was headed, the report said.

A check of Turbeville’s license revealed nine suspensions, cancellations and revocations dating from Feb. 19, 2024, to Aug. 27, 2025. These included fleeing from attempting to elude an officer, unpaid traffic fines and a criminal failure to pay. He also had two prior convictions for driving while license suspended or revoked and was labeled as a habitual traffic offender, the report said…
