Fast-traveling golf carts are the real danger in The Villages

My wife and I are currently renting in The Villages for three months and seeing where in The Villages we eventually want to buy a winter home. We love being in The Villages. This is our second year renting.

I just purchased an E-bike at a great little and local bike store here. My E-bike unrestricted will do near 30 mph. That’s fast. Out of the store my E-bike was set to limit my speed to 20 miles per hour. I kept it at that limit for a bit.

On the roads and on the multi-model paths it is a little dangerous because at 20 mph golf carts will come up on you quickly and pass you like you’re almost standing still. I found that over a couple of days riding to stay in the flow of golf cart traffic I had to be going at least 25 mph. I don’t like going that fast on my bike. I have since reset my speed limit to 20 mph. I try to move over and give lot’s of space to whoever is on the pathways. Sometimes I just pull onto the grass and stop to let golf carts get by if they are on my tail. Even so, it just a matter of time before another golf cart is tailing me again. Tunnels are the most dangerous. Our line of sight is limited and seldom do drivers move slowly through those areas…
