Suspect snatched golf cart while husband and wife shopped at BJ’s

A suspect has been charged with snatching a golf cart while a husband and wife shopped at BJ’s Wholesale Club in Lady Lake.

Shannon Michael Mason, 41, was booked Monday at the Sumter County Detention Center following his arrest on a warrant charging him with grand theft.

This past April, a husband and wife went shopping at BJ’s and when they came out of the store, they discovered their tan 2020 Yamaha golf cart was missing, according to an incident report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The report noted the golf cart had “multiple custom upgrades.”

A detective examined surveillance footage from BJ’s and noticed that the man who had stolen the golf cart resembled a suspect in another golf cart theft a few days earlier at Walmart in Summerfield. The detective matched notes with a Marion County Sheriff’s Office detective working the Walmart golf cart theft case and the two concluded that Mason was involved in both golf cart thefts. Mason was eventually convicted in Marion County Court in the theft of the golf cart at Walmart. That golf cart had been owned by an 89-year-old Stonecrest woman…
