Woman accused of dragging dog behind pickup after leaving dog park

A Wildwood woman has been accused of dragging her dog behind her pickup after leaving a dog park.

Jana Varman, 58, continued to be held this weekend at the Sumter County Detention Center following her arrest this past week on a warrant charging her with felony aggravated animal cruelty.

Officers had been called on Jan. 9 to investigate a report of a dead dog in the area of Family Dollar on South Main Street, according an arrest affidavit from the Wildwood Police Department.

Multiple 911 callers had reported that Varman had been driving a blue GMC Sonoma when she left the Bark Park on Powell Road. They said she was dragging her dog behind the truck. Motorists were honking and yelling in an attempt to alert Varman to the situation…
