Marion grandma accused of firing gun near grandson to ‘scare’ him

A Marion County grandmother who wanted to “scare” her grandson is now facing aggravated assault charges after she allegedly fired her gun near him on two separate occasions.

On Friday, February 27, 2026, several Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a Dunnellon residence after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, the deputies made contact with a male victim who advised that he had gotten into an argument with his grandmother, Betty Rhodes Martin, over laundry, according to the arrest report.

During the verbal altercation, Martin allegedly went into her bedroom, retrieved a small handgun, and told the victim that she was “going to shoot him.” According to the victim’s statement, he quickly went inside his bedroom, locked the door, and called 911…
