Resident of Oakland Hills flees from deputy during kidnapping investigation

A resident of Oakland Hills was arrested for resisting arrest after running into the woods when deputies showed up to investigate a kidnapping.

An individual went to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at County Road 466 and Morse Boulevard in The Villages to report information that would indicate a woman appeared to be held against her will, according to an arrest report.

The complainant handed over his personal phone so the deputy could read texts sent from woman. The phone provided a “ping” indicating Smith’s location.

Law enforcement responded to the area on Thursday and spotted Smith, who fled on foot into the woods. A deputy pursued him, commanding him to stop. As the chase continued back out of the woods, Smith turned around and looked in the deputy’s direction. He was subsequently arrested, the report said…
