Villagers plan ‘For Our Children’ Rally to honor Earth Day

Seniors, families, young adults and children of all ages are invited to join the “For Our Children” rally in honor of Earth Day. This peaceful, sign-holding rally will be held from 9-10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 25, along U.S. Hwy. 441 and Main Street in Spanish Springs, The Villages.

Attendees are asked to bring photos of themselves, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren or children in general to hold up along with their signs as a testament to whose future is at stake.

“I’m worried that we are just surviving the present-day chaos and corruption instead of working harder for a more livable, more caring future for our kids and grandkids,” said Sandy Schmid of the Village of Tall Trees.

Earth Day was first celebrated April 22, 1970. That day, millions of Americans participated in rallies, teach-ins, demonstrations, and street marches, evidence of the growing environmental awareness of the American public. During the Nixon administration, the U.S. government created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passed the Clean Air Act in 1970 and then the Clean Water Act two years later.
