Snowbird’s golf cart crash death fails to get officials to budge on Morse Boulevard

A snowbird’s death in a golf cart crash this past month has failed to persuade officials to budge on Morse Boulevard.

This past week, Sumter County commissioners threw up their hands and declared they are done trying to solve traffic problems on Morse Boulevard north of County Road 466. The decision came after the Amenity Authority Committee refused to tap its $7 million in “settlement” funds to pay to improve safety on Morse Boulevard.

In the meantime, 75-year-old Michael Day of Surry, Maine has been laid to rest after dying as the result of a crash which appears to be a textbook example of what is wrong with Morse Boulevard. Day was driving a red 2015 Advantage EZ-GO golf cart southbound on Morse Boulevard when he attempted to make a left turn onto Martinez Drive, but turned into the path of a blue 2024 Cadillac XT5 which had been northbound on Morse Boulevard, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The two vehicles collided and the golf cart overturned. Day was ejected from the golf cart. He was airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
