DUI suspect crashes in roundabout damaging golf cart tunnel

A drunk driving suspect crashed in a roundabout damaging a golf cart tunnel in The Villages.

Sean Michael Martin, 55, of Oxford, was driving a black 2018 Ford F-150 pickup with Virginia license plates at about 5:45 p.m. Monday when he crashed in the roundabout at Buena Vista Boulevard and Rainey Trail, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The truck’s driver’s side front and rear wheels were hanging over the edge of the roadway, above the golf cart tunnel.

“The vehicle was hanging halfway off the bridge wall being held up by the bush branches. I observed multiple big pieces of brick from the bridge wall was on the lower level part of the bridge along with one tire from the vehicle,” the deputy wrote in the arrest report.

A second deputy spotted Martin, who stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 218 pounds, hanging outside of the driver’s door. The deputies ordered the native New Yorker to be careful, due to the instability of the truck on the ledge. As Martin drew closer, the deputies could immediately smell the “strong odor of alcohol.”

Martin said he had been at Lake Sumter Landing and was heading home. He did not require medical attention and agreed to take part in field sobriety exercises. However, his poor performance prompted deputies to conclude that Martin had been driving impaired…
