Crystal River Driver Killed As Kia Collides With Semi At Sumter Crossroads

A 38-year-old Crystal River man was killed Wednesday morning when his car collided with a tractor-trailer at the rural junction of County Road 470 and State Road 44 in Sumter County. Troopers say the crash happened around 10:20 a.m., when the smaller vehicle moved into the path of the semi. Emergency crews pronounced the Kia driver dead at the scene, while the trucker walked away with minor injuries and declined medical transport. Authorities have launched an active investigation into the collision.

What troopers say

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by Tampa Free Press, the victim was driving a Kia Soul north on CR-470 when it “entered the intersection directly into the path” of a tractor-trailer that was traveling east on SR-44. Troopers noted that traffic on CR-470 is controlled by a posted stop sign at that intersection. FHP identified the truck driver as a 60-year-old Ocala man who sustained minor injuries and declined to be taken from the scene by ambulance.

Intersection safety and planned fixes

The junction where the crash occurred has been folded into broader safety and capacity planning in recent years. FDOT’s FY 2027–31 work program lists a traffic signal installation at SR-44 at CR-475/CR-470, and local planning materials describe lane and reconstruction projects on nearby roadways intended to cut down on collisions and improve traffic flow. Sumter County public records also reference studies and projects affecting CR-470 and the SR-44 corridor that are aimed at addressing high-impact crashes on rural intersections…
