A bicyclist suffered injuries in a hit-and-run crash in a roundabout in The Villages.
The bicyclist had been riding at about 8:30 a.m. in the roundabout at Bexley Trail and Central Parkway, not far from the Olympia Recreation Center, when he was hit by a U Dump trailer towed by a white Ford F-250 truck, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. The trailer was not covered and contained loose dirt.
The Ford F-250 and the trailer had been passing the bicycling while traveling in the same direction. The trailer hit the bicyclist in his lower left leg, causing him to fall to the ground. The bicyclist’s helmet cracked open and he suffered injuries to his back and leg. The driver of the Ford F-250 kept going, but a witness snapped a photo of the license plate on the trailer, before the driver got away.
Officers began searching for the truck, which was spotted in the area of U.S. 301 and Warm Springs Avenue. The driver was identified as 52-year-old David Michael Zerla of Ocala. The witness was transported to the scene of the traffic stop, and the witness confirmed that Zerla had been driving the truck that hit the bicyclist…
