The Oklahoma City Council has approved new sign codes to improve the look of business areas and neighborhoods. The codes, adopted on February 13, require property owners to keep their outdoor signs in good condition. The new rules will be effective from March 15.

The ordinance targets signs that are in poor condition, damaged, abandoned, illegible, or no longer relevant to the business. Property owners will be notified if their signs violate the new codes.

If a violation notice is received, property owners can submit a compliance plan to the Code Enforcement. If the signs are not corrected, the City can hire a contractor to remove the sign, with the cost charged to the property owner.

Code Enforcement Superintendent Chad Davidson stressed the importance of the new ordinance. He said that neglected signs not only affect the city’s look but also contribute to its decline. He added that the city prefers compliance over citations and will give property owners time to comply.
