Anjalina Thomas, a pre-engineering student at Canadian Valley Technology Center (CV Tech) in Yukon, Oklahoma, has been accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Thomas is a senior at Yukon High School and is one of 11 undergraduate students from Oklahoma at MIT. The university is known for its academic excellence and research. The acceptance rate for MIT applicants is about 5 percent.

Thomas aimed to attend a prestigious institution like MIT. She joined the pre-engineering program at CV Tech to improve her educational skills. She hopes to major in mechanical engineering at MIT, following in the footsteps of her mother, Sonia, a petroleum engineer at Continental Resources in Oklahoma City.

Thomas selected CV Tech over the Oklahoma School of Science and Math to stay near home. She valued the STEM-focused education, small class sizes, and resources at CV Tech. A former student’s positive experience also influenced her decision.

Thomas has been recognized as Yukon’s only National Merit Finalist and one of three finalists in CV Tech’s afternoon pre-engineering class. About half of the 7,250 finalists nationwide receive a National Merit Scholarship of $2,500 and are recognized as Merit Scholars.
