Contractor fined over $85K for fatal Shawnee trench collapse

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — An Edmond contractor has been fined over $85,000 after one of their employees was killed in a trench collapse back in February .

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, a 61-year-old pipe layer employed by Jerlow Construction Co. was killed when a nine-foot trench collapsed at a residential worksite in Shawnee while working to install an eight-inch water line.

OSHA was called in to investigate, and determined the contractor allowed employee to work in an excavation without the proper protective equipment.

The Department of Labor also noted that Jerlow Construction has a history of workplace safety violations, which can be found at osha.gov .

Jerlow Construction received citations for one repeat violation and three serious violations as a result of the investigation, and will face a total of $85,173 in fines.
