Attending high school reunions could be one of life’s greatest blessings

I had so much fun at my high school reunion last weekend that I’m putting my party hat on ― my former Oklahoman Parties, Etc., column hat ― to share it here in a rare personal post. What made the weekend even more special was an unexpected date with a high school classmate from the ’50s, Don Howe, who called me after more than 60 years to ask me to attend the weekend with him. We had the best time and laughed all weekend. It was kind of like having a blind date. I haven’t had contact with him in decades except for a couple of brief encounters over the years. Remember, I am 84 years old.

What a jolt and a delightful surprise to reconnect with a new (old) friend, see so many longtime friends and enjoy all the memories together.

The U.S. Grant High School’s 66th reunion was held recently at South Embassy Suites on a Friday and Saturday. People traveled from out of town, as they do, stayed at the hotel, attended the mixer Friday night and attended the Saturday buffet luncheon. They looked at high school photos (from 66 years ago), and thoroughly enjoyed talking about old times. Judy and Larry Warner were the reunion chairmen, as they have been since we graduated from high school.
