OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) is saluting Robert S. Kerr. a man who served the state as the first native-born Governor.
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society , on September 11, 1896, Robert S. Kerr was born in a log cabin in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (near present-day Ada).

Kerr was governor of Oklahoma from 1943 to 1947, becoming Oklahoma’s first native-born governor, says OHS . He also served in the U.S. Senate from 1949 to 1963. He remained chair of the board of Kerr-McGee throughout his time in public office. Kerr was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1956. He died on January 1, 1963, in Washington, D.C.
