One person died Monday from injuries suffered in a crash the previous week in Wheeler County, the Texas Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday.
According to preliminary reports, Ronald Tompkins, 62, of Ford, Kansas, was driving a 2001 Toyota Sequoia south on US 83 at about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 17 about six miles north of Shamrock. While he was passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone, Tompkins moved the Toyota back into the southbound lane for unknown reasons behind a 2014 John Deere cotton stripper. He failed to control his speed, and the Toyota then rear-ended the farming equipment, according to DPS.
Tompkins was taken to Shamrock General Hospital with serious injuries and later airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he died on Dec. 23 from the injuries he suffered in the crash.
The roadway had a 75 mph posted speed limit with dry and clear weather conditions at the time of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
