VRBO, Airbnb home shares under more scrutiny as OKC council increases fees

Operating a VRBO/Airbnb-style home share in Oklahoma City just got a little more expensive.

The city council recently passed a steep fee increase, from $300 to $1,100, coinciding with an agreement between the city and a technology company that will scrape public records and use artificial intelligence to find unlicensed home share operators.

The council passed the increase for home share licenses and other planning services at its Tuesday, June 17, meeting. Two weeks before the vote, seven home share operators told the council the increase would affect their bottom line. One told The Oklahoman the increase might drive people to go non-compliant and just pay the fine…
