New hippo statue at OKC Zoo in honor of iconic song

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — It’s not Christmas yet, but do you want a hippopotamus for Christmas? The Oklahoma City Zoo got one today!

A bronze statue of a hippo that is. It’s to celebrate the iconic Christmas song sung by Oklahoman, Gayla Peevey.

The statue of Matilda the hippo and Gayla Peevey will forever be recognized at the zoo.It’s something Peevey said is special as she reflects on the song that’s been heard all over.

“Honestly never expected anything like this. To have a legacy. I never dreamed that my legacy would be a hippopotamus, but it’s the song and it goes on generation after generation,” said Gayla Peevey, who sang the original “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” song.

Peevey originally sang “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1953…
