Norman Police Department Launches Oklahoma City Metro’s First Electronic Detection K9 to Aid in Crime Investigations

In a recent development that bolsters the Norman Police Department’s capabilities, a new K9 unit named Murphy has been introduced, equipped with the unique skill to sniff out electronic storage devices. As reported by the Norman Police Department, Murphy stands out as the first Electronic Storage Detection K9 in the Oklahoma City metro area and represents one of just a handful statewide.

Murphy, alongside handler Detective Megan Kieft, is trained to detect and successfully locate hidden electronics – like cell phones, hard drives, and USBs – which could easily be overlooked during routine searches. The addition of Murphy aims to significantly boost the investigative process, specifically in tackling Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC), child exploitation, and other related criminal activities. In a quoted statement obtained by the Norman Police Department, “This K9 not only strengthens our ability to investigate crimes but also embodies our commitment to supporting victims and their families.”
