University of Oklahoma welcomes largest freshman class in state history

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) — The first day of class began on Monday for students at the University of Oklahoma, and the Sooners welcomed their largest freshman class ever, and the largest in the state.

The university announced that 6,251 incoming students make up the Class of 2029, extending two streaks for the school: It is “the fifth straight year for record freshman enrollment,” and it is also “the third consecutive year that a record number of Oklahomans have chosen to start their freshman year at OU.”

Officials with OU say that the Norman campus has had a 16% increase in enrollment for the fall term, while jumping more than 30% in freshman enrollment over the past three years. The school has seen a total enrollment of more than 36,500 students across all of its campuses.

“The Class of 2029 symbolizes the unmatched value of an OU education that is rapidly drawing students and families from across Oklahoma and beyond,” said OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. “We are excited to champion another outstanding freshman class as they begin the life-changing journey that comes with earning an OU education.”

The incoming freshman class is said to have a collective unweighted high school GPA of 3.64, while 711 students had a 4.0 GPA or better…
