Norman faces pressure to halt Flock cameras over privacy concerns

NORMAN, OKLA (KOKH) — The Institute of Justice is urging Norman city officials to reject the implementation of Flock Safety cameras on city streets.

The Flock cameras are automated license plate readers (ALPR) that capture images of vehicles to be uploaded to a remote server that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) for vehicle profiles.

“These cameras are incredibly revealing and allow police to reconstruct people’s past movements without a warrant or any reason to believe they’ve done something wrong – that’s a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment,” said IJ Attorney Michael Soyfer, a leader for the IJ’s Plate Privacy Project. “Norman should learn from the cities that canceled their contracts after learning how ripe they are for abuse, like Denver and Austin.”…
