OKC Zoo celebrates birth of endangered okapi calf

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The Oklahoma City Zoo has welcomed a new member to its animal family!

According to the Zoo, a female okapi calf was born on Sunday, August 24, at the okapi barn in Expedition Africa. The calf was born to parents, Kayin and Bosomi.

“We’ve been eagerly awaiting the birth of this little calf and are thrilled that she’s here, healthy and strong,” said OKC Zoo’s Curator of Hoofstock, Bill Smith. “Okapi are endangered, so this calf represents a new generation of okapi that are vital to the population as a whole. We look forward to watching her thrive alongside her parents.”

Officials say the new calf and her mom are doing well. They will soon have access to the outdoor habitat, weather permitting…
