Credit Union employee training helped stop scammer from making off with $50,000

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The quick thinking of a metro credit union employee halted a scammer from making off with $50,000. It happened at a WEOKIE Federal Credit Union branch in Yukon.

The employee thought it was strange that the customer was asking to make the hefty transaction, so the employee started asking questions.“As they started talking, things got more and more confusing, and it seemed clear that the member really didn’t know what was happening to her,” said Jeff Carpenter, WEOKIE Federal Credit Union President and CEO.

Carpenter said the credit union has trained its employees to spot red flags, especially with large transactions.“Their job is to say ‘if this doesn’t feel right, then it may not be right,’” said Carpenter.
