Oklahoma City Man Sentenced to Over 11 Years for Illegal Firearm Possession Amidst Criminal History

An Oklahoma City man is faced with a lengthy prison sentence following his latest run-in with the law. Dorieon Mykel Bates, age 29, has been handed down a sentence of 138 months in federal prison for illegal firearm possession, on top of previous convictions, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester. Bates’s encounter with the law began on January 30, 2024, after a 911 call was placed by someone reporting gunshots and Bates later turned up at their door, admitting involvement in a shooting and alleging his vehicle was stolen, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Oklahoma.

However, the story Bates recounted unraveled quickly, when police, having returned him to the original scene following a hospital visit, discovered his car nearby, complete with bullet holes and a loaded gun, thus voiding Bates’s claim of a stolen vehicle, which, as it turns out, was a fabrication. Bates, already on record with a series of felony convictions ranging from robbery and domestic abuse to assault on a law officer, eventually pleaded guilty to the firearms charge on February 4, which led to his recent sentencing on September 23, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office release.

Bates’s criminal history in Oklahoma County is extensive, with convictions for offenses like robbery with a firearm, domestic abuse by strangulation, and assault and battery upon law enforcement, public records reflect.
