CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Four people were shot during the tree lighting in downtown Concord, North Carolina Friday night, abruptly ending the annual event, city officials say.
Police say those hospitalized were the two shooters and two 17-year-olds. Both shooters and one 17-year-old are in critical condition; the other 17-year-old has since been released. The city-operated event was being held along Church Street and Cabarrus Avenue.
“A night of celebration for our community was interrupted by senseless violence, affecting everyone who was there,” Concord Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said. “Our community showed great strength and resilience as everyone came together to help one another and our officers. Due to the quick actions of our downtown businesses, the public, first responders, and law enforcement, we were able to quickly evacuate the area, prevent additional injuries, and identify all suspects involved.”
