Oklahoma oak trees go nuts during mast seeding

While you’ve been out walking around, you might have seen — or stepped on — more acorns this year.

The Oklahoma County Master Gardeners posted on social media that this is common when oak trees mast, or produce more acorns than normal. While oaks produce acorns annually, mast seeding does not happen every year. When it does occur, plants of the same species in an area do it in sync.

Mark Turner, wildlife specialist with the Oklahoma State University Extension, said acorn production happens annually, but oak masting is in the fall when acorns are hitting the ground. He said the trees make more acorns to reproduce, and wildlife like deer, turkeys and squirrels feast…
