The Oklahoma Sooners are now 4-0, as they cruised to all four wins in Arlington, Texas. The Sooners dominated the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, beating Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, No. 7 TCU, and New Mexico State. They may have been the hottest team in baseball this week, having played four strong D1 programs—two with recent tournament success.OU’s pitching staff is really what’s making the headlines right now. Cam Johnson’s stellar season opener against Texas Tech got all the attention. However, he’s not the only one who’s throwing it well. Oklahoma had some pitching throws against NM State on Monday Night, but that’s expected when they’ve played their final game of a long road stand against some really good teams. And, the staff is letting everyone know they’re a team people need to be on the lookout for.

“They want to disrespect Oklahoma, we’re going to let them know what’s up,” pitcher LJ Mercurius said.To break down some of the staff’s weekend even more, I talked to A to Z Sports’ Adam Holt, who serves as our baseball analyst and brings in-depth knowledge of both the Sooners and collegiate pitching.
Sooners pitching staff has been great
Heading into this season, I did believe in the Sooners’ pitching staff a bit more than some other folks simply because I liked the big swings they took.Cam Johnson, who dominated last Friday night in his debut, was the sort of big, toolsy arm that Skip Johnson loves to mold into a cornerstone ace. Then, you add in someone like Mercurius. His performance caused 31 (!!) whiffs on Saturday against an Oklahoma State team that was picked to finish 5th in the Big 12. They’re no slouches offensively, but he was rock solid in that victory.
Reid Hensley is a player I’ve highlighted before, and I could see him being their most consistent arm out of the bullpen. The floor of his profile may be more important than the ceiling, but if you need an inning or two out of a guy, they can trust him. I’d expect him to eat up plenty of opportunities in big games this season. Keep an eye on Jackson Cleveland, the Miami transfer, as well. He’s ultra-experienced in college baseball, and I think he will prove to be a reliable option for Johnson’s unit on the mound as well.Plenty of season left to go for the Sooners to stack these sorts of weekend outings, but the start was incredibly impressive…
