Man indicted on charges after 70+ guns, $40K in cash found in South Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A grand jury has indicted an Omaha man after federal agents seized more than 70 guns and $40,000 in cash during a gun trafficking investigation.

Agents arrested Jose Gerardo Ruiz Alonso on gun charges in July, he is allegedly in the country illegally after overstaying a tourist visa in 2012.

Investigation began with bank tip

Court records show a bank tipped off investigators that Ruiz Alonso’s business showed signs of money laundering. Investigators said that is when they learned of his alleged side business dealing firearms.

Agents said they sent a confidential informant to Ruiz Alonso’s business in south Omaha to buy a gun. Investigators said Ruiz Alonso took the informant to a room in his warehouse with at least 15 guns on the counter. Ruiz Alonso allegedly sold three guns to the informant.

Guns, cash seized in raid

When the FBI raided his home and business this week, agents found 71 guns and thousands of dollars in cash.
