Flood rescues mount as downpours shatter all-time rainfall record in Nebraska town

Moisture from Pacific hurricanes Polo and Odalys has combined with a storm moving out of the West to fuel the flooding deluge.

Flooding has forced water rescues, closed highways and overwhelmed wastewater infrastructure across the Plains, with additional downpours looming for parts of Texas and the South Central states into the weekend.

In Omaha, Nebraska, firefighters responded to 80 water-rescue calls between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. About 50 people and multiple pets were rescued or assisted near 62nd and J streets, where floodwaters reached 6-8 feet deep, according to the Omaha Fire Department.
