(Glenwood) — Mills County officials disagreed on the best way to potentially remove a member of the planning and zoning commission.
By a 2-1 vote during its regular meeting Tuesday morning, the county board of supervisors rejected removing Al Hughes from the county’s planning and zoning commission. Supervisor Jack Sayers, who was the lone vote in favor, made the motion to remove Hughes from the entity after speaking with Building and Zoning Consultant Matt Wyant and other representatives from the department. Sayers cited provisions in Iowa Code that allow the supervisors to remove a member from any county board due to “inefficiency, malfeasance, or neglect of duty” and concerns over Hughes’ attendance at planning and zoning commission meetings.
“When considering the current planning and zoning makeup, it was brought to my attention that last year out of six meetings, Al only attended three of them and the previous year before that it was the same, and the previous year before that,” said Sayers. “I personally enjoy Al and I think he’s a good person, but to be able to be on the planning and zoning (commission) we need people who are going to be there and have the expertise to share their concerns. Al has the expertise, he just doesn’t always go to the meetings.”…
