Today in History – Aug. 3: Lewis and Clark make first council with Native Americans

FORT CALHOUN, Neb. (WOWT) – On this day in 1804, explorers Lewis and Clark made their first council with Native Americans.

According to the Nebraska State Historical Society, Lewis and Clark made their council with the Oto and Missouria tribes at a site near present-day Fort Calhoun, a site they named “Council Bluff.”

However, this is not the “Council Bluffs” we see in Iowa today…
