Bob Kerrey Bridge to Light Up Red in Honor of Social Security’s 90th Anniversary

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, AARP will light up Omaha’s Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in AARP red as part of the Skyline Salute—a nationwide tribute marking the 90th anniversary of Social Security.

For nine decades, Social Security has served as a cornerstone of financial security for millions of Americans, delivering earned benefits reliably and on time. Today, more than 370,000 Nebraskans—nearly one in five residents—receive Social Security benefits, helping older adults avoid poverty and live with dignity after a lifetime of hard work. These benefits inject an estimated $7.7 billion into Nebraska’s economy each year.

“Social Security is a promise kept—and we’re proud to light up our Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in recognition of its legacy and importance,” said Todd Stubbendieck, State Director of AARP Nebraska. “It has helped hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans stay out of poverty and afford the basics.
