Patrol urging caution, preparedness for holiday travelers

(Council Bluffs) — State law enforcement officials are reminding motorists of tips to stay safe while traveling over the upcoming holiday weekend.

Beginning today and running through Sunday, the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is holding its latest “Selective Traffic Safety Program” or STEP initiative, coinciding with the Thanksgiving weekend. As of Friday, 244 traffic fatalities had occurred on Iowa’s roadways, down over 20% from this time last year and also from the five-year average. Trooper Ryan Devault is the public resource officer with the patrol’s Council Bluffs post. Devault tells KMA News that motorists can expect a larger law enforcement presence on the roadways this weekend from not only the patrol, but city and county agencies as part of the STEP initiative.

“We try to put more people on the road just to be not only an enforcement deterrent, but even a visual deterrent,” said Devault. “If people see us out there and maybe were going a little over the speed limit to begin with, they might slow down, hopefully. So we try to do our part to make sure the holidays are a safe one, and hopefully that continues again this year.”…
