Today in History – Dec. 23: Omaha’s Union Station named National Historic Landmark

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – On this day in 2016, Omaha’s Union Station was designated a National Historic Landmark.

The building traces its origins back to 1929, when plans were drawn up for a new Union Station across from the Burlington Depot on 10th Street. The train station opened in 1931.

It closed 40 years later when Amtrak came to town. Union Pacific gifted Union Station to the city in 1973…
