‘It’s not an accident’: Drunk driving crash victims remembered as holiday enforcement increases

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol reduces your reaction time and increases your chances of getting in a crash. This one decision can change lives forever.

Mary Daniels lost her son, Joseph, and his best friend, Thomas Greise, in a drunk driving crash six years ago. She keeps the key to Joseph’s car that was in the ignition when his car was hit.

“The gentleman that killed him had been drinking. He wasn’t overly drunk — he blew a 0.09 at the scene of the accident,” Daniels said. “He was actually coming back from a wedding and he actually took an Uber to his truck then got in his truck and drove.”

“It was a conscious decision to get behind that wheel being impaired,” she said. “I just don’t think people all the time think about all the consequences that could come of it and that’s where you see a lot of the bad decision making, getting behind the wheel and driving and that like I said leads to those negative consequences.”

Holiday enforcement increases

The deaths of Joseph and Thomas were not isolated incidents. By mid-November of this year, 72 Nebraskans had died from impaired driving crashes. That’s out of 213 killed in all traffic incidents…
