Today in History – Jan. 4: Fur trader, county namesake Peter Sarpy dies

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – On this day in history, Sarpy County’s namesake, Peter Sarpy, died on January 4, 1865.

Sarpy dealt in Nebraska’s fur trade and territorial periods. He was known for his competition and was loyal to his employer.

In 1832, Sarpy and his boss illegally seized a competitor’s keelboat, which got them kicked out of the territory.

In 1841, Sarpy was convicted of “false imprisonment” in Saint Louis. He had enslaved a man who was legally free. Sarpy disputed the charge, but the court freed the man…
